The Longest Day

by Rachael on June 21, 2011

I’ve tended to think of winter and summer as nested within each other. At the beginning of summer, the days begin to diminish: the seed of winter. At the beginning of winter, the days begin to lengthen: the seed of summer.

At the heart of joy, sorrow; at the heart of sorrow, joy. So I believe.

Happy solstice!

And to you, too! Today my 9yo asked me when the first day of summer would be. When I told him it was today he replied, “So the kindergarteners were right.” I think we’re going to work on his sense of time!

Thank you! I kept seeing Solitice, blah blah and didn’t register what was happening until I saw your post. So, thanks.
I do like to know and we’re introducing our little one to these concepts now too. Fun!
Have a wonderful day.

Same to you!

I really like your thought about how the seasons are nested within each other. Comforting and poetic!

I agree – it’s all nested inside everything else. Life is kind of bittersweet that way.
